The E-newsletter of the Northern Lights District, August 2021

Welcome to the New Northern Lights District

This summer, the Hawkeye Area Council reorganized into two districts. Our district volunteers have been working hard to better serve the units in our area. To learn more about our district and to contact one of our volunteers, check out our district web page. Be sure to join our Facebook group to stay up-to-date on what is going on in our district. Finally, the council map has been updated to include the locations of the units in the district.

September Roundtable

Our first Roundtable of the new Northern Lights District will be on September 2nd at the Marion Methodist Church from 7:00-8:15pm. There will be a Zoom link available for those who wish to join from home. Roundtable is one of the best ways to stay informed of what is happening in our district and council. We encourage all adult leaders to attend.

Scout Nights at the Park

My name is Luke Hawkins and I am the membership chair for the Northern Lights District. I’m super excited about the upcoming school year and getting back to Scouting in the units in which we serve. We all have experienced some challenges in Scouting in the last 18 months and we made it! I feel this year we have opportunity to make a huge impact on not only the youth we are currently serving, but the youth that have not gotten that chance to sign up last year and this upcoming year.

This year we are doing something different that I feel that it will be very impactful for your program. We are doing 2 district Scout Nights at the Park events.  At these events, the youth and their families can learn what Scouting is all about and allow the youth that attend to do some fun Scout activities and provide information about how to join the program.

Now you may be asking yourself, how are youth going to hear about this event? We are going to be doing some social media ads, but word of mouth advertising is the best and with your help, these events can be a huge success. For example, if you are doing a back to school night table and you have that parent or youth that doesn’t have time to talk you at your event, but want to know more, you can give them the to dates and the locations and we will give them a taste of Scouting and an opportunity to sign up. if they do, we will get their application to you and then give them your contact information so that they can start their Scouting experience.

I also encourage you to update your BeAScout pin (unit contact and location information) by going to my.scouting.org. If a parent that attends your school goes to the beascout.org and wants to learn about Scouting you will receive an email from that parent. It’s a great tool and if you want to know more about it and/or update the pin, please contact the Scout Office and speak with Tammy.

The first Scouting in the Park night is August 25 at Noelridge Park in Cedar Rapids from 6:00 to 7:30 and Sept 9th at Thomas Park in Marion from 6:00 to 7:30.

I encourage you all to check the school access for recruitment talks, the availability for Scouting meetings, and to check out the membership resources that the Hawkeye Area Council offers. Thank you for everything you have done for the Scouting program and for everything you are going to do for the youth in the communities you serve as leaders,

If you have questions, please let me know.

Yours In Scouting,
Luke Hawkins

Fall Recruitment Resources Available

Be sure you have everything you need for a strong fall recruitment. Several resources are available at the council office including customized flyers and posters. The online form below can be emailed to the office to order various supplies. The form also asks for dates of your pack recruitment nights and ask if you would like geofencing. Geofencing is simply allowing the council to pay for Facebook ads for up to 2 of your recruitment events. They will be advertised around your pack’s meeting location, or wherever you like. Also, if you have let the council know of your recruitment nights, our district volunteers would love to be there to help spread the word about the positive impacts of Scouting.

There are multiple incentive programs available to packs and individuals this year. See the requirements as well as other helpful recruitment best practices using the the link below.
